There are volleys used in volleyball, and foot and hand can be referred to as verbs when talking about their relative sport.

Honestly, while I agree with this, I still do feel that it is a rather strange point, especially considering that basketball isn't played with baskets.

Honestly, I think we could use both words. The only problem would be if people call American football only "football" instead, as it appears that football/soccer was created before American football was created.

When the sport was first played, it was played by upper class Brits, and they called it 'soccer'. The name 'football' only started being used, about 18 years later, when the lower classes started playing it. They didn't want to call it the same name as the wealthy, so they came up with the name 'football'.

So although, Football is used more commonly worldwide, the word 'soccer' actually came first.
